The Graduate Diploma in Midwifery at UTS is a highly competitive course that qualifies registered nurses as professional midwives through the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA).
This course provides a broad theoretical and clinical study in midwifery. It includes discussing professional, sociopolitical and ethico-legal issues related to the family, as well as research skills that enhance midwifery practice and interpersonal processes. You will undertake concurrent employment as a midwifery student in an accredited midwifery unit. You will need to complete 48 credit points, comprising nine compulsory subjects.
The Graduate Diploma of Midwifery is a course designed for registered nurses who wish to join the midwifery profession. The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency/Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia approves and recognises this course, which aligns with national standards.

This program has a limited quota of Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP). The indicative CSP price is calculated based on first year fees for EFT. The actual fee may vary if there are choices in electives or majors.

Entry requirements
Applicants must have one of the following:
- Completed an Australian bachelor's degree or higher qualification, or overseas equivalent, in Nursing; current registration as a nurse in Australia; and current employment as a midwifery student in an approved maternity unit.
- Current registration as a nurse in Australia; current employment as a midwifery student in an approved maternity unit; and relevant professional experience; a general capacity to undertake tertiary education, demonstrated by successful completion of hospital or college certificates and professional or staff development.
Supporting documentation to be submitted with the application
Curriculum Vitae and Statement of Service in one of the following formats:
- A 'Statement of Service' provided by the employer.
- A completed 'UTS statement of service’ signed by the employer.
- A statutory declaration confirming work experience (for Australian Residents only).
- An official letter from the applicant’s accountant or solicitor on their company letterhead confirming the applicant’s work experience or engagement with the business, duration of operations, and the nature of the business.
- A business certificate of registration in the original language and English (e.g. provision of ASIC documentation, ABN or similar documentation for Australian Businesses).
For employment as a midwifery student in an approved maternity unit:
- Applicants need to make an application for employment as a midwifery student through the centralised recruitment process conducted by the Nursing and Midwifery Office at the NSW Ministry of Health, Midwifery Student Application for Recruitment and Training (MidStART), or through direct application to affiliated private hospitals. Private hospitals that offer midwifery student positions include the Mater Hospital (check their website for details or contact the hospital directly), Sydney Adventist Hospital (applications open in June; check the hospital website for details), St George Private Hospital, and North Shore Private Hospital. Prospective students must contact private hospitals directly to apply for a midwifery position.

Your previous education or employment must be evaluated to be equivalent to a UTS subject as per the Admissions and Recognition of Prior Learning Policy and Procedures. This assessment considers:

Prior learning can be recognised only once within any individual UTS course. It cannot be recognised again for another subject or component in that course.
Alternatively, subject substitution might be offered. This is where an alternative subject(s) of equivalent credit point value is added to your study plan.

Commonwealth Supported Places
The Australian Government allocates a certain number of CSPs to the universities each year, which are then distributed to students based on merit.
If you're a Commonwealth Supported Student (CSS), you only need to pay some of your tuition fees. The student contribution amount is the balance once the government subsidy is applied. This means your costs are much lower.
Limited CSP spaces are offered to students enrolled in selected postgraduate courses.
Your student contribution amount is:
- Calculated per unit you're enrolled in.
- Depending on the study areas they relate to.
- Reviewed and adjusted each year.
HECS-HELP loans are available to CSP students to pay the student contribution amount.
FEE-HELP loans are available to assist eligible full-fee-paying domestic students with the cost of a university course.
