Course overview

This course will give you the qualifications and skills you need to become a practising physiotherapist in Australia. Developed in collaboration with health professionals, industry leaders and professional bodies, it will equip you with the future-facing capabilities required to adapt and respond to rapidly occurring health and health system changes.

Through problem-based and practical learning experiences, you will be introduced to various health care settings with widespread community health impact. You will participate in community-based projects and authentic experiential learning activities that develop and apply lean system thinking skills, preparing you to respond to complex health care problems. These will build your capacity for work readiness, ensuring client-centred, quality and safe health care across diverse service delivery settings, with experience in regional, rural and metropolitan landscapes.

Graduates of the Master of Physiotherapy complete the degree equipped with the theoretical and practical skills required for their future career as registered Physiotherapists.

CSP Subsidised Fees Available

This program has a limited quota of Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP). The indicative CSP price is calculated based on first year fees for EFT. The actual fee may vary if there are choices in electives or majors.

Entry requirements

Applicants must have completed a Bachelor's or Master's degree (other than Physiotherapy) from an Australian university in the last 10 years, having completed the equivalent of:

  • Two units (25 credit points) of human physiology, ideally including exercise physiology.
  • Two human anatomy units (25 credit points), including detailed musculoskeletal, cardiorespiratory and neurological anatomy.
  • One unit (12.5 credit points) of study in psychology.
  • One unit (12.5 credit points) of study in research methods and/or evidence-based practice.

Prior study in exercise, biomedical or other health sciences is recommended.

The prerequisites can be completed via enrolment in UTAS units, other Australian universities or international universities that offer appropriate-level units or the Open University. Applicants are advised to check with the academic lead on the appropriateness of the units before commencing.

Fees and CSP

Commonwealth Supported Places

The Australian Government allocates a certain number of CSPs to the universities each year, which are then distributed to students based on merit.

If you're a Commonwealth Supported Student (CSS), you only need to pay some of your tuition fees. The student contribution amount is the balance once the government subsidy is applied. This means your costs are much lower.

Limited CSP spaces are offered to students enrolled in selected postgraduate courses.

Your student contribution amount is:

  • Calculated per unit you're enrolled in.
  • Depending on the study areas they relate to.
  • Reviewed and adjusted each year.

HECS-HELP loans are available to CSP students to pay the student contribution amount.

FEE-HELP loans are available to assist eligible full-fee-paying domestic students with the cost of a university course.
