Course overview
Effective diabetes care requires an understanding of the clinical, behavioural and social factors that influence people living with the condition. The Master of Advanced Practice (Diabetes Studies) is designed for registered nurses, midwives and paramedics seeking to strengthen their contribution to diabetes healthcare and education.
The specialisation examines the nature and prevalence of diabetes in local, national and global contexts. You will explore individualised care and management across the lifespan and within priority populations, including the physical, biological, psychological and psychosocial factors associated with diabetes and its diagnosis.
Your studies also address evidence-based approaches to diabetes healthcare and education, research methods, healthcare policy and the translation of evidence into clinical practice. A clinical placement in a diabetes-related health service supports interprofessional learning, while the Master program provides an opportunity to complete applied research in your area of specialisation.
The Master of Advanced Practice is based at Curtin Perth, while the Diabetes Studies specialisation is delivered online on a part-time basis. Depending on prior qualifications, the master may be completed in one or two years of full-time equivalent study. By combining diabetes care, evidence translation and applied research, graduates can strengthen their contribution to individualised care, clinical decision-making and improvements in diabetes healthcare and education.

Entry requirements
Academic requirements
To be eligible for this course, you must meet the following requirements:
- Hold a bachelor's degree, a bachelor's honours degree, a graduate certificate or a graduate diploma in their related field.
- Have a health-related degree with a course weighted average of 65% or above and an academic status of Good Standing OR be a health professional. An Aboriginal health worker/Aboriginal health practitioner may apply for portfolio entry into the course.
- Have a minimum of three (3) years experience in their related field post bachelor degree.
Applicants must provide a CV or resume outlining their employment history and proof of current professional registration.
English language requirements
Curtin requires applicants to demonstrate English language proficiency. You can meet this requirement by providing evidence of one of the following:
- An IELTS Academic overall band score of 6.5, with a minimum score of 6.0 in reading, writing, listening and speaking.
- An alternative English language test accepted by Curtin, provided you achieve the required equivalent scores.
- An eligible previous qualification or another form of English language evidence accepted by Curtin.
