What you will study

To complete the Certificate of Forensic Nursing and Midwifery, you must complete four units (24 credit points).

You must complete the following units

  • Nursing, midwifery and the criminal justice system
  • Understanding Injuries
  • Adult sexual assault
  • Ethics, medicine and the law

Entry requirements

Minimum Entry Requirements (Domestic students)

Qualifications

  • An Australian Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent) in nursing or midwifery with at least a pass (50%) average. And Current practice registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.

English requirements

Level C

  • IELTS (Academic): 7.0 Overall score, with minimum band scores: Listening 6.5, Reading 6.5, Writing 6.5 and Speaking 6.5.
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic): 65 Overall score, with minimum scores: Listening 58, Reading 58, Speaking 58 and Writing 58.
  • TOEFL Internet-based test: 94 Overall score, with minimum scores: Reading 19, Listening 20, Speaking 20 and Writing 24.
  • Equivalent approved English test.

Learning outcomes

  • Describe the structure of the Australian criminal justice system and the role of forensic evidence in alleged matters of physical and/or sexual assault.
  • Demonstrate skills in preparing medico-legal reports for and presenting medico-legal evidence to Australian courts.
  • Accurately identify, classify, interpret and document a range of injuries and injury patterns that may arise from physical and/or sexual assault.
  • Apply knowledge and demonstrate skills using forensic photography equipment to produce high-quality photographic evidence.
  • Perform adult clinical forensic examinations to detect, assess, interpret and document evidence of physical and/or sexual assault.
  • Apply recommended techniques for the collection, preservation and documentation of evidence taken during physical and/or sexual assault clinical forensic examinations to meet the legal guidelines for admissibility in Australian court proceedings.
  • Appropriately interpret and incorporate medical ethics principles into the practice of forensic nursing and midwifery.

Average 2025 total course fee: $15,200 (domestic full-fee paying place)

All costs are calculated using current rates and are based on a study load of 24 credit points (normally four units).
