Master of Speech Pathology Studies

  • Delivery: Face to Face
  • Study Level: Postgraduate
  • Duration: 24 months

Enhance your theoretical knowledge and professional skills while acquiring the clinical and research skills necessary for a career in speech pathology.

Course overview

The Master of Speech Pathology Studies program at UQ is an accelerated two-year program designed for students who have already completed an undergraduate degree. Speech pathologists are healthcare professionals who assist individuals experiencing communication and swallowing difficulties. They collaborate with individuals, communities and other healthcare providers to minimise the impact of these challenges and enhance the quality of life for those in need throughout their lifespan.

From classrooms to communities, you’ll work alongside experienced professionals to make a significant difference in people’s lives. This speech pathology program has been educating professionals since 1962. You will acquire the knowledge, skills and attributes necessary for a fulfilling career as a speech pathologist. Graduates will be prepared to deliver individualised, culturally responsive and evidence-based interventions and support. Through both theoretical and practical components, you will develop the confidence to tackle challenges related to speech, language, voice, fluency, hearing, cognition and swallowing.

The program emphasises inquiry-based and simulated learning experiences, providing opportunities to develop a broad range of practical skills. Additionally, you will participate in supervised clinical placements, which may take place in hospitals, educational facilities, healthcare organisations, private practices and UQ’s own Speech Pathology Clinic. As a speech pathologist, you will work with individuals of all ages, including newborns with feeding difficulties, children with speech, language and literacy challenges, adults with acquired brain injuries and older adults in aged care.
